Pros and Cons of Facebook Brand Timeline

The new Facebook brand timeline offers a lot of new features, but at the cost of losing some old favorites. Here is the break down.

Pros

Personified - Timeline heavily resembles that of personal profiles, including milestones. If used wisely this can help personify your brand and

Analytics - For businesses its all about the ROI and timeline helps you track with the better analytics. Under the admin panel Facebook now tracks engagement, reach, and interactions.

Pinning / highlighting - You can now keep your best content at the top of your wall

Messages - Facebook now lets brands send private messages to followers and vice versa, something many had been wanting.

That giant cover photos - Pictures say a 1000 words and Facebook really allows you to brand yourself with the introduction of cover photos.

Cons

Tabs & Landing Pages - The major drawback with timeline is that loss of tabs. Okay, they are not comply gone but they are pretty hard to find and cannot be set to your landing page. That's right all the time and money you spend developing that prefect landing page is pretty much a waste now.

Static Profile Picture Ratio - This won't bother most people, but I thought I would include it any ways. With timeline, facebook no longer allows for long rectauglar profile pictures. Your stuck with the square.

Are you Tracking Your #Twitter Links?

One of the best parts of digital marketing for advertisers is the insane amount of data that can be collected. But are you taking advantage of it? In today's data driven world your clients or boss is going to what to know 'is it worth it' or whats the 'ROI'.

So why should you track who clicks on your links?
1. Information is power
2. You get better at what you do
3. Make your boss happy
4. Prove that your an asset to the company and not just the guy who gets paid to be on Twitter all day

Heres how to start:
1. Find your favorite URL shortener. I'm a huge fan of Google (I want to be on their good side when they talk over the world) so I use goo.gl, but there are many others (bit.ly, tiny url.com, etc).
2. Sign up! This is the most important part. Once you sign up the site will remember your links and track and analyze the click.
3. Remember to sign in and use it.

Soon enough you will be able to analyze what your click through rate is, the date and times people clicked, and their geographic location, and ton more. Not to mention it remembers the long and short url you created.

Quick Tip: Telephone Hyperlink

I am currently in the process of redesigning my personal site, and creating a mobile version of it. While brainstorming ways I could make it more user friendly I thought "wouldn't it be cool if there was a way you could make a phone number a link for mobile phones?" and sure enough there is.

With over 89 million people accessing the internet from their smartphones every year, mobile  is becoming more important than ever. Similar to the mailto syntax, tel creates a hyperlink that will launch the phone feature and call the specified number. The html code is bellow.

<a href="tel:319-234-8872">319-234-8872</a>

Mysterious QR Codes

Have you ever noticed that QR rarely tell you where they take you?

The other day I brought a package of rasins and noticed that on bottom of the package there was QR code. However, there was no mention of where the code took you. Being curious I whipped out my phone and scanned the code. Turns out it links to Sun Maid's mobile site, where they offer recipes and a list of products.

This isn't the first time I found myself curious were a QR code linked to. I frequently stumble across quick response codes existing with no furhter explanation, but why is this?  Do clever marketers know consumers will be curious and scan the code, is it that there is not enough real estate space for an explanation, or maybe it a design issue and the delivery looks better without it.

What ever the reason, I think it is helpful to tell consumers were the code links. I'll admit I have used QR codes with out an explanation in the past. However, not describing where the code links is bound to cause high bounce rates. That is what I did the first time I scanned Sun Maid's QR code. Some may not even make it to their site once the QR reader shows a website link, the curious consumer has found out what they wanted to know.
